i did a three week tour of the highlands in scotland this past summer with my historic preservation class. i enjoyed the ruins the most -- less crowds, more thought-provoking. i felt a lot more when i visited those places.

it was great going there in the summer - I was definitely the ONLY person out tromping about in the snow. The people in the tourist office looked utterly shocked to see someone darkening their door in the off season. :)

what kinda of camera do you use? any special filters or lenses? any photo advice?

Digital camera is a Canon S60. My film camera is a Pentax ZX-7, which I have several lenses and filters for. I also occasionally use a Holga 120S and a Horizon 202.

Photo advice ... digital cameras are great, because it doesn't matter how many mistakes you make.

i have a question for you. i don't know what the temperature was specifically on your trip, but did your camera ever have difficulties focusing in the cold? last winter when i was living in MA, during the bitter cold month of January, i went out several times to take pictures when it was well below freezing (down to about 5 degrees F) and found that it took a lot longer for my camera to focus in those conditions (even when i braced it or used a tripod, so my shivering didn't affect it). i'm wondering if it was just my camera, me, or most digital cameras...

I've never had trouble with it focusing in the cold, no. But, on this trip, it didn't get below 30 degrees fahrenheit. And, honestly, I can't think of a time when I had my camera out in extremely cold temperatures like that. If we ever get a proper winter this year in NY, I'll take it out and test it. :)
