No, actually, I didn't. I made only minor adjustments to the coloration in this photo - I brought the light down a little bit in the foreground, but I left the sky alone.
I think the bw version is too flat. Maybe if you adjusted the levels slightly so the white areas poped a bit more instead of looking grey I would agree with you. But the colors on the top one are just amazing, so seeing them together there's no comparison.
Out of curiosity, are you on a laptop, a flat screen desktop, or a regular desk-top?
I've been trying to be careful with my black and white photos lately, because after viewing my photos on a regular desktop and getting some back from the prints, I realized that flat screen and laptops show everything CONSIDERABLY lighter. A lot of photos that I thought looked perfectly good turned out to be very dark, so I've been trying to go easy on the curves/constrast/levels.
But I do agree with you. I just uploaded a slightly altered version of the black and white.
At work where I viewed that image I'm on a CRT graphic monitor. At home on the 20" iMac G5. Images on the mac tend to be brighter and as a general rule of thumb I have to try and remember to bump the levels up slightly since the gama on macs in general is higher than that of PCs.
now i have to decide which username to use when posting comments...when will my social struggles end??
the top one looks like a beautiful day i'd love to enjoy. the second one looks like some impending doom. just, the dark sky at the top, and a seemingly barren city. creepy. amazing the effect color has on the mood.
and to tap into another discussions going on through some other comments here....i've noticed when i view photos here on my mac g5, they look quite different than on everyone else's desktop. my screen seems so much more crisp and vivid...and so i can never tell if my stuff appears too dark/light/saturated/etc on everyone else's screen....
