Which crop do you like better? Rectangle or square?

i think the square is stronger.

I like square

[identity profile] duccio.livejournal.com 2005-05-08 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
Square is much better in this case - while rectangular is all wrong.

[identity profile] lotophagous.livejournal.com 2005-05-08 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
i like the square better, it's more harmonious, almost monumental. but the rectangle is slightly more dynamic.

I was immediately drawn to the rectangle for its cinematic style, but I feel that the square is a better composed shot in its own right.

I do like the detail of the water in the rectangular, though... it seems a little sharper.

square :)

xo.

I saw you post in a Community and I noticed your username.
It is the full name of my sister.

Is your sister named after a character in Vanity Fair? Or is that just a coincidence?

Rebecca is her given name. Sharp is our family name.
No relevance to the character in Vanity Fair, however.

i love the rectangle...the square feels incomplete to me.

[identity profile] explosive.livejournal.com 2005-05-08 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
There's something about the rectangle that I like better, even though normally I'd like a tighter crop.

[identity profile] photofreedom.livejournal.com 2005-05-08 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
i think square.

[identity profile] smidget.livejournal.com 2005-05-08 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a tough call but I'd agree...the square feels incomplete. There's a balance to the rectangular one that gives it a powerful sense.

[identity profile] kismekate.livejournal.com 2005-05-08 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
rectangle.

[identity profile] goddessofjoi.livejournal.com 2005-05-08 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The rectangle has a more postcard feel, that says "europe" to me.
The square has a more self contained value i think. It is less of a fountain and more of a feeling.

[identity profile] velveau.livejournal.com 2005-05-08 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I like them both, very much.

[identity profile] lather2002.livejournal.com 2005-05-08 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Hard to say really. Have to give it more thought. I will get back to you.

[identity profile] conversus.livejournal.com 2005-05-08 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
i think the rectangle is stronger. like others have said, the rectangle offers more balance i think.

[identity profile] lynda.livejournal.com 2005-05-08 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Granted, I'm no authority on photography, but I'm surprised so many people have said square. I don't like the square at all when compared with the rectangle. It doesn't tell a story for me, it's just a picture. It doesn't look as crisp and clean to me, nor is there as much contrast, an element I believe to be crucial to a black and white photo. I also don't think the square conveys the fact that it's raining very well, surfaces just look shiny and everything else just looks fuzzy.

[identity profile] gen3ric.livejournal.com 2005-05-08 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
to me, the arch in the regtangle looks stronger than the one in the square, plus I've always been a fan of the rectangle format. great picture either way.

[identity profile] twelve45.livejournal.com 2005-05-08 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
i like the rectangle. like other people have said, there's more balance in the rectangle.

[identity profile] ibacho.livejournal.com 2005-05-08 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
it all depends. the rectangle seems much more stable in that water to me, as if the foot is landing. the square seems rather unsettled to me, as if the foot is part of either a falling figure or a jumping figure.

i don't know if it's the composition of the clarity of the arch, though.

[identity profile] themlsna.livejournal.com 2005-05-08 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
While I miss the details of the water in the rectangle crop, I think the square one is stronger, compositionally.

[identity profile] lilrock84.livejournal.com 2005-05-08 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
hi. i like ur pictures. i hope u don't mind if i add you. and i like both, but square is better.

[identity profile] rebeccasharp.livejournal.com 2005-05-09 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind at all. :)

[identity profile] moonnfreak.livejournal.com 2005-05-09 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
my first reaction is square.

[identity profile] papayas.livejournal.com 2005-05-09 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
square. :)

[identity profile] mycartoon.livejournal.com 2005-05-09 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
the first one.

[identity profile] asdefgaheckel.livejournal.com 2005-05-13 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
hey i came across this lj of yours in one of those communities you're in.

incredible.

i would be honoured if you added me in return.

xo,
mike.

[identity profile] asdefgaheckel.livejournal.com 2005-05-13 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
pee ess--square.

[identity profile] mistress-elaine.livejournal.com 2005-05-13 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I seem to be in a minority here, but I prefer the rectangle. As others have noted, it seems more balanced.

[identity profile] rebeccasharp.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
You're not in the minority, because I think I like the rectangle better too. :)

[identity profile] mistress-elaine.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
Great minds think alike. :-)

Would you mind if I added you? I love your photos.

[identity profile] rebeccasharp.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone may add me. :)

[identity profile] nebanebet.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
I like the rectangle better. It's more dynamic - there's more grace to the implied movement of the dancing woman, whereas the square one the foot is just kind of there, making her look like a bronze statue placed on the fountain ledge instead of a living, animate human being dancing in the rain.
