Dear friendslist:

Does anyone like this photo? I can't decide... I think it might be a bit too busy.

It is very busy, but she pulls it all together. The eyes stop at her and are fixed. It is a beautiful feeling to be fixed on something.

I like the first one better, because the reflection is so clear.

I really like the second one, although I see what the person above means about the clarity of the reflection. The second just seems more atmospheric and moody.

If anything, I think the colours could be improved a bit. They seem a little dull, perhaps they could be brightened with a bit of extra contrast or saturation? I'd leave v2 the way it is though.

I have a version with the colors brightened, but I don't like it very much - again, it seems really busy to me.

I actually like the second one too, because I think that the vignetting contains the image a little more. However, I also agree that the clarity of the reflection is sacrificed.

Ponder ponder.

Perhaps the vignette can be reshaped to bring out more of the reflection?

I'd suggest making your decision without comparing it to the first version. I think that enough of the reflection is captured to create a beautiful effect, and it is only when compared with the original that you realise what is missing.

Know what I mean?

I adjusted the vignetted one a bit.

Yeah, it is quite "busy". There does not seem to be a central point of focus. It takes too long to comprehend what you seem to be trying to highlight as the main subject (the kirl ?). Maybe if the kirl was absent from the shot it would have come off better or maybe not. It just does not grab my attention. But hey, that is just one persons opinion. The overall exposure is excellent though in the second photo from the top.

I wonder :) I rather like the stillness in the image, however, the colours do appear a little muted, I'm not sure why. I prefer the 1st version but perhaps somewhere between the first and the second will work quite well in my mind too. In either case, the higher contrast in the area around the figure anchor the subject.

Have you tried a B&W?

I have indeed. :) It was the first thing I tried. I posted it in the comment below this one.

I wonder, after looking at the B&W version I'm thinking richer blacks? I hope you don't mind that I tried to play with the photo, it's just hard to explain without showing. Here's one version that can be done in PS.

No, I don't mind at all. I like that (I actually have a similar version :) ), but again, I feel like she gets lost. That's the reason I prefer the color a little more.

I uploaded a MUCH larger version, but I don't want to direct link it, if you're interested. The detail is a lot better in the larger, uncompressed file.

Larger Version.

I like the second one, which is quite atmospheric. That said, I'd probably have zoomed in on the bridge and its reflection in the water a bit more, and left out some of the top and left half of the picture. Either that or I would have tried a black-and-white version, as [livejournal.com profile] shashin was suggesting. I think it would make a lovely black-and-white photo. I'm actually a little surprised you haven't tried a black-and-white version yet, given your love for monochrome. :-)

I have tried b&w. :) It's here.

I should have known. :-)

The black and white looks OK, but I'd have to agree that the coloured versions are better. Now that I look at them again, I don't think cropping (as I originally suggested) would improve them much. The composition is quite nice, albeit a little busy. That said, I think it might work as a square. Have you tried that? Cut a tiny little bit from the left and a little more from the top and you might have a very nice picture. Not that there's anything wrong with the way it looks now, but you know what I mean. :-)

I prefer the first one to the second. I don't think it's all that busy, though I was at first overwhelmed by the patterns of leaves and didn't notice the girl right away - but when I did see her, I felt as if I had found something. The feeling of discovery, like spotting a $20 in the gutter, is what made me like it that much more.

I like the second better, but I think the problem is that she seems fuzzy. Did you save this as lower quality? It might be better as a larger print. Like this she seems too small and out of focus--maybe if she was wearing red she might pop out more? The composition is really nice.

It doesn't work in B/W, I think, but in colour it's good. She is a good focal point and pulls it together. A pity she's reflected in the water, without that it would be quieter and easier on the eye.

Still lovely. :)
