After my little experiment last night scanning medium format negatives on a flatbed scanner, I pulled out some of my other negatives this evening to take a closer look at them. I noticed that the prints on some of them were losing detail that was definitely present in the negatives. I also noticed that the prints seem to cut off part of the frame. This is probably something that anyone who has taken a proper photography class would know, but I'm slow to pick up on things. I also noticed that, for whatever reason, the photographs I took with Kodak Tmax scanned in much nicer than the photographs I took with Fuji Neopan. So, I take back anything negative I said about Tmax.

The biggest difference was in this photo -

you lose a bit of detail with every step. especially in the bright highlights and deep shadows, and seeing as prints are optimised for contrast and all that.. losing that little bit extra can really take it out of a shot. i've always been quite unhappy with flatbed scans of prints. i seem to be repeating what you've already said. hah OK!

I really want a proper negative scanner now. I should have written it into one of my dissertation improvement grants.

me too! this agfa t1200 just isn't good enough. i'm no longer studying unfortunately, actually it's probably a good thing.. i don't think postgraduate study would've suited me.

Would you mind explaining the process of scanning your mf's on a flatbed? I'm getting a mf soon and have a negative/slide scanner already, but the overhead internal light isn't big enough for a mf frame and I really don't have the space/money for another scanner. I've heard of people scanning negatives on a regular flatbed before, but couldn't find the right combination of buttons to push when I tried it. ;)

I actually just straight scan them, just like you'd scan anything else. On my scanner you can automatically tell the scanner to invert the colors, but I find that doing that makes the scans poorer. So, I just scan them normally, at a very high resolution (300-600 dpi). Then I import them into photoshop and invert the colors. And that's basically it! Very simple, really... also, make sure to dust off your scanner before you scan. I always forget to do that, and then have to clean the dust and scratches off of my images.

We confess that we use mostly digital... though one of us like more of the way the pics comes out in film :) these are all great!! You are indeed right, the pic that you put behind the cut lost much more detail than the first one... it seems that you can't "see" the texture of the wall...

This post is making us wanna try film!!

I love film, but I do mostly digital photography for the simple reason that it is cheaper and money is pretty tight right now.

Indeed :| we would love to buy Photoshop so that we can edit some of the pics that we take but we are still thinking twice abt it.

By the way... sorry for not commenting on the portrait series... we really liked it!! They were all awesome... and we wouldn't change anything :)
